tightvncserver only letting me launch LXDE session not Gnome session
VNC or Virtual Network Computing is a graphical desktop sharing tool that allows you to control a computer (server) remotely from another computer (client). KDE, LXDE, XFCE etc. For this tutorial, we will be using the XFCE desktop as our VNC desktop environment. Install XFCE desktop including all dependencies using the apt command below. Found some great instructions for putting a lightweight desktop environment on your (Lowend) VPS or server. Uses no more then like 40mb RAM tops, but can be tweaked to only 10-20mb I think. # Make sure Debian is the latest and greatest apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get dist-upgrade # Install X, LXDE.
Hi!
I'm using Debian 8 on a VPS. I'd like to change my VNC session to gnome3, but I can't seem to get my xstartup right because I keep getting LXDE sessions and not gnome sessions.
I'm using tightvncserver. Here is my xstartup in ~/.vnc/ :
I've also tried this:
I can open a 'KVM' session through my VPS control panel, and get to the Debian 8 login screen. There I can select my username and select the session as 'Gnome'. Taking that path, Gnome launches just fine. That being said, the KVM utility is really for emergencies only -- not something to rely on. When I select the default Windows Manager in the list, LXDE launches, which makes me think it has something to do with the default manager. So I found this through Google and my /etc/X11/default-display-manager looks like:
Which is what I would expect for gnome 3.
For completeness, here is my log file. Thank you so much for your time and input.
